How Does Kybella Work?
Kybella is an adipolytic medication2, or injectable therapy for localized fat elimination, and is the only FDA–approved, non-surgical treatment for unwanted submental fat deposits3. Kybella is injected into the subcutaneous fat under the chin causing these tissues to break down and be naturally eliminated and absorbed by the body. Once these fat cells have been destroyed, they can no longer accumulate or store fat, resulting in a permanent slimming effect, tissue tightening, and dramatic improvement in the appearance of the area under the chin and profile
What to Expect During Your Kybella Treatment
Before starting your Kybella treatment, your provider will take your medical history, discuss your aesthetic concerns, and examine the area around and under your chin to determine if Kybella is right for you. Then, your provider will create a custom treatment plan, with the number of Kybella injections required to reach your goals. After sterilizing the treatment area, your provider will place multiple small injections of Kybella under your chin. These injections take approximately 15 to 20 minutes.
Preparing for Your Kybella Treatment
Before your Kybella treatment, it’s important to tell your provider about any medical conditions you may have, as well as any previous cosmetic treatments and/or surgeries on your face, chin, or neck. It’s important to avoid any blood-thinning medications in the days leading up to your Kybella appointment.
It is normal to experience some bruising, swelling, and/or numbness under the chin after a Kybella treatment and this will gradually diminish in the week following your treatment, however, it can take up to one month for swelling to completely subside. Kybella treatments should be spaced at least one month apart; not only does this allow swelling to resolve and the active ingredient in Kybella time to work, but it also provides your body the time it needs to heal in between treatments.
Most patients see noticeable results and visible improvement in submental fat after 12 weeks and a minimum of two Kybella treatment sessions. Optimal results are generally seen after six months and a maximum of six treatments.
